SAP Business One vs Odoo for companies in Kuwait

Both are ERP systems for companies that have outgrown accounting software and spreadsheets. This comparison is for owners and finance directors in Kuwait choosing for 20 to 300 users, and it says where SAP Business One fits better as well as where Odoo does.

SAP Business One suits a company that wants a mostly standard ERP for finance, stock and sales, licensed per named user and run by an SAP partner, especially when the parent company already uses SAP. Odoo suits a company that wants finance, stock, sales, POS, HR and payroll in one database, with Arabic screens, and expects to change the system as it grows. In Kuwait the deciding points are usually Arabic, payroll, the amount of customization and local support. We are an Odoo partner, so we have kept to what each vendor publishes.

The two products in brief

SAP Business One is SAP’s ERP for small and midsize companies. SAP lists financials, inventory and distribution, production and MRP, sales and service, projects, purchasing and administration. It runs on SAP HANA or Microsoft SQL Server, on your own servers or in a partner’s cloud, and it is sold, implemented and supported through SAP partners.

Odoo is a set of business apps on one database, made by Odoo S.A. in Belgium. Accounting, Inventory, Purchase, Sales, CRM, Point of Sale, Manufacturing, Employees, Payroll, Helpdesk and the website builder share the same records. It runs on Odoo Online, on Odoo.sh or on your own servers, and it is sold by Odoo directly and through partners.

Licensing

Business One is licensed per named user. Professional users can use and administer the whole system; Limited users are each assigned one area: Financial, Logistics or CRM. A Starter Package covers teams of three to five users. Systems that read or write Business One data through its interfaces, such as a web shop, need indirect access licenses. Licenses are bought through a partner, as perpetual licenses with annual maintenance or as a cloud subscription.

Odoo charges a monthly fee per internal user with every app included; customers and suppliers using the portal are free. The Standard plan runs on Odoo Online without custom modules; the Custom plan adds Studio, several companies in one database, the external API, and hosting on Odoo.sh or your own servers. Prices on odoo.com differ by country, currency and billing term.

In practice: with Business One you choose a license type per person, and interfaces add licenses. With Odoo you count the people who log in to the back office, and the plan decides hosting, Studio and API access.

Hosting and where the data sits

Business One runs on your servers or with a partner that hosts it; under SAP’s cloud terms, the partner handles servers, backups and first-line support. Odoo runs on Odoo Online (standard modules only), on Odoo.sh (Odoo’s cloud platform for custom modules), or on servers you choose. Both can run on servers you control; ask each partner where the servers are and who holds the backups.

Kuwait: Arabic, payroll and group companies

Kuwait has no VAT, so neither system needs a tax setup for Kuwaiti sales. The work for Kuwait sits elsewhere.

  • Arabic. Kuwaiti consumer law requires invoices to consumers at least in Arabic. Odoo ships an Arabic interface that runs right to left, a Kuwaiti chart of accounts, and Arabic as a second language on invoices and POS receipts. For Business One, ask the partner to show Arabic screens and an Arabic invoice on the exact version they propose.
  • Payroll. SAP’s module list for Business One does not include payroll, so Kuwaiti payroll (PIFSS contributions, end-of-service indemnity under Labour Law No. 6 of 2010, salary files for the bank) comes from a partner add-on or a separate payroll system. In Odoo, Payroll is one of the apps and the Kuwaiti rules are set up in it; see Odoo Payroll.
  • Group companies. Many Kuwaiti groups run a trading company, a services company and a branch in Saudi Arabia or the UAE. In Business One each company is a separate company database; Odoo’s Custom plan keeps them in one database, with intercompany rules and reports across companies.

Customization and add-ons

Business One is extended with its SDK for desktop add-ons, the Service Layer API used by the web client and by integrations, and the Integration Framework for connecting other systems. Partners also sell ready-made add-ons for industries and for country requirements.

Odoo is extended in two ways. Studio adds fields, screens, automation rules, approval rules and PDF layouts without code, and Odoo upgrades Studio changes along with the database. Larger changes are written as Python modules, which your partner maintains and moves to each new version.

In both cases, ask who owns each customization at upgrade time and what it costs to carry it forward.

Reporting

In Business One, printed layouts and many reports are built with the Print Layout Designer or SAP Crystal Reports. Odoo gives every app pivot and graph views that users filter and export, spreadsheet dashboards fed with live data, and PDF documents designed in Studio or in code.

Ask each partner to build two reports from your data during the demo: the monthly management pack in Arabic and English, and receivables aging by salesperson.

Upgrades

SAP delivers Business One updates as feature packages, and customers with a valid maintenance agreement receive new versions at no license cost. Direct upgrades are normally supported only between consecutive releases, so a system several releases behind is upgraded in steps.

Odoo supports each major version for three years. Its upgrade service converts the standard apps and Studio changes; custom modules are moved to the new version by whoever maintains them. On Odoo Online a major-version upgrade is required every two years; on Odoo.sh and your own servers you plan the timing.

Where SAP Business One fits better

  • Your parent company runs SAP and wants subsidiaries on SAP products for reporting and audit.
  • Your processes are close to standard and you expect few changes.
  • You already have a Business One partner you trust, with consultants in Kuwait and add-ons for your industry.
  • Your finance team knows Business One well, and retraining would cost more than the software difference.

Where Odoo fits better

  • You want finance, stock, sales, POS, HR and payroll in one database, without separate systems.
  • Arabic screens for warehouse, sales and HR staff matter as much as Arabic printouts.
  • You expect processes to change as you grow and want to make some changes yourselves in Studio.
  • You want to pay per user without choosing a license type for each person.

How we help with the decision

We are an Odoo partner in Salmiya and do not sell Business One. We offer a comparison on your own processes: a discovery workshop, a demo of Odoo on your data, and a written scope with the apps, customizations and implementation plan. Companies already on SAP can read about Odoo as an SAP alternative.

If you move to Odoo from Business One, we migrate customers, suppliers, products, open balances and stock, and cut over only when record counts and balances match; see Odoo migration.

What to do next

  1. Write down the five processes that make or lose money for you, for example quotation to delivery or purchase to stock.
  2. Ask each partner to run those five on their system, in Arabic, with your sample data.
  3. Book a consultation and we will run the Odoo side of that comparison.
FAQ

Common questions

It depends on your user mix and add-ons. Business One prices each named user by license type and adds indirect access for integrations; Odoo charges one monthly fee per internal user with all apps included. Ask both partners for a five-year cost covering licenses, hosting, implementation and support.

Both handle purchasing, stock and sales. Odoo is the stronger choice if you also want POS, a web shop, HR and payroll in the same database; Business One fits well if your group already runs SAP and your processes are standard.

Yes. Customers, suppliers, products, open receivables and payables, stock and opening balances are exported from Business One, imported into Odoo and checked until record counts and balances match.

No. Kuwait has no VAT as of October 2026. Branches in Saudi Arabia, the UAE or Bahrain need that country’s VAT setup, and Saudi branches also need ZATCA e-invoicing.

It depends on the scope more than the product: companies, apps, integrations and records to migrate. We fix the scope and timeline in writing after a discovery workshop.
