Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central vs Odoo in Kuwait

Business Central and Odoo are both cloud ERP systems licensed per user and sold through partners. This comparison is for owners and finance directors in Kuwait with 20 to 300 users, and covers licensing, Microsoft 365, Arabic, localization, reporting and where each one fits.

Business Central fits a company that runs on Microsoft 365, works mainly in English and wants its ERP from Microsoft with Power BI on top. Odoo fits a company that needs Arabic screens and documents, wants POS, HR and payroll in the same database as finance, and expects to change the system as it grows. In Kuwait the deciding points are usually Arabic, the partner who localizes the product, and how much beyond finance you want in one system. We implement Odoo; this article keeps to what Microsoft and Odoo publish.

Cloud model

Business Central online is a Microsoft service: Microsoft runs the servers and updates the software, and your partner configures and extends it. For Kuwait, Microsoft lists Business Central online as available, localized by partners on the international (W1) version, with the environment database in Microsoft’s UAE Azure geography. An on-premises version also exists for companies that want their own servers.

Odoo offers the same choice in three forms: Odoo Online, where Odoo runs everything for databases with standard modules; Odoo.sh, Odoo’s cloud platform for databases with custom modules; and servers you choose.

Business Central online gets two major updates a year, in April and October, and minor updates in the other months. Each environment has five months to take the major update; after a further grace month, extensions that block it can be uninstalled. Odoo supports each major version for three years; on Odoo Online a major upgrade is required every two years, and on Odoo.sh or your own servers you plan it.

Licensing

Microsoft sells Business Central per user through its Cloud Solution Provider partners. The main license types are:

  • Essentials: finance, sales, purchasing, inventory, projects and warehouse management.
  • Premium: everything in Essentials plus manufacturing and service management.
  • Team Member: read access plus limited tasks such as approvals, quotes and time sheets.
  • Device: a shared device, such as a POS, shop floor or warehouse terminal, used by several people.
  • Microsoft 365 users: employees with a Microsoft 365 license can view records shared with them in Teams without a Business Central license.

Odoo charges one monthly fee per internal user with every app included; customers and suppliers using the portal are free. The Standard plan runs on Odoo Online; the Custom plan adds Studio, several companies in one database, the external API, and hosting on Odoo.sh or your own servers. Both vendors publish list prices that vary by country, currency and billing term, so compare quotes for your own user count.

The structural difference: with Business Central you choose a license type per person and pay more for manufacturing and service; with Odoo every internal user costs the same and the license covers every app.

Microsoft 365, Outlook and Teams

This is where Business Central is strongest. The Outlook add-in shows a customer’s or vendor’s financial data next to their email and creates quotes and invoices from Outlook. In Teams, a link to a customer or sales order expands into a card colleagues can act on. Lists open in Excel, Edit in Excel sends changes back, and users sign in with their Microsoft accounts.

Odoo connects to Microsoft 365 too: Outlook calendar sync, an Outlook add-in that creates CRM opportunities from email, and Microsoft sign-in. The link is lighter than Business Central’s.

Kuwait and Gulf localization

Microsoft does not localize Business Central for Kuwait or the other Gulf countries itself. Partners publish localization apps on Microsoft’s marketplace on top of the international version, sometimes more than one per country. The Kuwaiti features you get, and who keeps them working after each update, depend on the partner.

Arabic is the bigger point. Microsoft’s list of supported languages for Business Central, checked in October 2026, does not include Arabic, so screens run in English or another listed language, and Arabic on printed invoices depends on the report layouts your partner sets up. For a finance team that works in English this matters little; for warehouse, sales and HR staff, it matters every day.

Odoo ships an Arabic interface that runs right to left, a Kuwaiti chart of accounts, and Arabic as a second language on invoices and POS receipts. Kuwait has no VAT, so neither system needs a tax setup for Kuwaiti sales; Saudi branches need ZATCA e-invoicing, which Odoo’s Saudi localization covers and a Business Central partner app must provide.

Payroll is the third point. Kuwaiti payroll means PIFSS contributions for Kuwaiti staff, end-of-service indemnity and salary files for the bank. Odoo Payroll is one of the apps and is set up for these rules; see Odoo Payroll. With Business Central, ask whether the partner’s localization includes payroll or whether you need a separate payroll system.

Extensions and Odoo apps

Business Central is extended with extensions written in AL in Visual Studio Code. They add fields, pages and logic without changing Microsoft’s code, and ready-made apps are sold on Microsoft’s marketplace. With two major updates a year, every extension must stay compatible with each release; that is the partner’s job and belongs in the support contract.

Odoo is extended with Studio, which adds fields, screens, automation, approval rules and PDF layouts without code and is upgraded by Odoo, and with Python modules for larger changes. For third-party modules from Odoo’s app store, check who maintains them.

Reporting: Power BI and Odoo

Business Central comes with Power BI apps by functional area, Power BI reports can be embedded in Business Central pages, and report writers can build their own in Power BI Desktop. If your management already reads Power BI, this is a real advantage.

Odoo reports are built into each app: pivot tables and graphs on live data, spreadsheet dashboards, and PDF documents in Arabic and English; see Odoo Accounting for the finance side. Power BI can also report on Odoo data pulled through the external API on the Custom plan, or read from the database when Odoo runs on your own servers.

Where Business Central fits better

  • Your company runs on Microsoft 365 and Power BI, and management reports already live there.
  • Your staff work in English and do not need Arabic screens.
  • You have a Business Central partner with a maintained Gulf localization and consultants in Kuwait.
  • Your group has standardized on Microsoft Dynamics.

Where Odoo fits better

  • Staff outside finance need Arabic screens, and documents must be in Arabic and English.
  • You want POS, eCommerce, HR and payroll in the same database as finance and stock.
  • You want every internal user on the same license, whatever their role.
  • You want to change screens and approvals yourselves with Studio.

How we help with the decision

We implement Odoo from Salmiya and do not sell Business Central. For a company comparing the two, we run a discovery workshop, show Odoo on its own data in Arabic and English, and put the scope, apps and implementation plan in writing. Before go-live, functional training covers each team.

What to do next

  1. List the people who will use the system and what each one does in it; that sets the license count on both sides.
  2. Ask the Business Central partner which Kuwait localization app they use, who publishes it, and how Arabic documents are produced.
  3. Book a consultation and we will show the same processes in Odoo with your data.
FAQ

Common questions

Yes. Microsoft lists Business Central online as available in Kuwait, localized by partners on the international version, with data in Microsoft’s UAE Azure geography. The Kuwaiti features depend on the partner’s localization app.

Arabic is not in Microsoft’s list of supported languages for Business Central as of October 2026, so screens run in English or another listed language, and Arabic on printed invoices depends on your partner’s report layouts. Odoo includes an Arabic interface that runs right to left.

Yes. Odoo syncs with Outlook calendars, has an Outlook add-in that creates CRM opportunities from email, and supports Microsoft sign-in. Business Central’s link to Microsoft 365 is deeper.

It depends on your user mix. Business Central charges by license type, with Premium for manufacturing and service, while Odoo charges the same per internal user with all apps. Compare five-year quotes including implementation, extensions and support.

Yes. Odoo data can be pulled into Power BI through the external API on the Custom plan, or read from the database when Odoo runs on your own servers. Odoo’s own pivot views and spreadsheet dashboards cover day-to-day reporting without it.

No. Kuwait has no VAT as of October 2026. Branches in Saudi Arabia, the UAE or Bahrain need that country’s VAT setup, and Saudi Arabia also requires ZATCA e-invoicing.
